In accordance with the order of the Sheriff-Substitute, Alexander Wilson publicly burned two copies of the poem at the Tolbooth, Paisley. Bound with a printed copy of ‘The Shark’, 1792.

The copy is imperfect, lacking the title page. In addition to the amendments of Berlioz to instrumentation and dynamics, strips of blue paper on which is written an Italian version of the libretto are pasted to the printed pages, covering the French libretto, through the greater part of the volume. The paper covers in which the volume was previously enclosed are bound in at the back (folios i-iv).

With a valuation, 1777, by John Bell, bookseller, Edinburgh, at £50 (folio vii); letters of Alexander Guthrie (presumably the Edinburgh bookseller) making the books over to Archibald Constable, and of Constable transferring the purchase to John Clerk, 1801 (folio i); and a drawing by Walter Geikie, 1825, from a portrait of Sir Robert Gordon, 1st Baronet, 1621.

The earliest catalogue hitherto known is that printed for the sale by J G Cochrane in 1816.

The volume is made up of pages from a copy of the 1769 edition of ‘The Fair Quaker of Deal, or, the Humours of the Navy’ by Charles Shadwell (originally published in 1710), bearing numerous small textual alterations and deletions, and leaves containing a great deal of new or completely revised material, written in a formal contemporary hand.
